The Story Behind the Name

So, who is Sam Howard? The answer goes back generations, to two Southern gentlemen who never met but shared a legacy that lives on through our store. 

Samuel File and Howard White each grew up in the early 1900s — men of quiet confidence and timeless style, with a love for family, friends, cigars, good bourbon, and a life well-lived. Though their paths never crossed, both valued hard work, integrity and quality — the very traits that continue to guide us today. 

Years later, their stories intertwined when Sam's granddaughter, Margaret, and Howard's grandson, Don, both found their way to Greensboro, North Carolina. A few chance meetings turned into a lifelong partnership — one built on shared values, a love of family, and a shared appreciation for good style.

After nearly two decades of marriage and a successful children's boutique, Polliwogs, the idea of opening a men's store began to take shape. When the space next door became available, it felt meant to be. The name was an easy choice — a tribute to the two men whose legacies inspired it all. 

Sam Howard Men's Clothier is more than a name. It's a story of heritage, connection, and style passed through generations — and one we're proud to share every time someone walks through our doors.
